Mt Toubkal Long Weekend - Winter

During the winter Mt Toubkal and the surrounding peaks of the High Atlas turn into a walkers paradise; with empty trails, clear air and spectacular views over the Toubkal Massif. This trek is an energetic way to spend a long weekend with just three days in the mountains to approach, summit and descend the highest peak in North Africa. Passing through a Berber village we gain an insight into the life and traditions of these hardy and friendly mountain people. After our trek we have some free time to explore the vibrant and colourful city of Marrakech.

Reviews

Title : Amazing scenery and views from the summit
Summary : A brilliant three day trek through the mountains which was a winter wonderland whilst we were there. The summit climb isn’t too tough (think Ben Nevis plus a bit) and the views from the top are just amazing.

Question : What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Answer : Standing on the summit. Great views over the Atlas Mountains and beyond.
Question : What did you think of your group leader?
Answer : Abdul was a cool and calm leader, great fun, with lots of local knowledge. He really connected us with the local environment and people.
Question : Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Answer : Check that your group has avalanche transponders with them. We didn’t but another group from exodus did. Given it had snowed heavily for the week before and that we were one of the first groups to make the summit for a while I think it’s worth carrying them.
Question : Is there anything else you would like to add?
Answer : Memories of this trip will last forever.

Title : Mount Toubkal over New Year 2017/2018
Summary : Excellent short trip to climb Mount Toubkal. If you've done a generous amount of fitness training and hiking in advance of arriving in Morocco then you'll be fine. Prepare for a VERY long day on the day when you climb Toubkal!

Question : What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Answer : Realising on the way back down when we looked behind us just HOW much we achieved in climbing Toubkal. Awesome sight.
Question : What did you think of your group leader?
Answer : He was very good.
Question : Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Answer : Take lots of layers to ensure you are protected from the cold - even the waterfalls we saw were frozen solid! Make sure you pack a head torch as this will be essential for the early morning start. Ensure you have worn your boots in fully before you get to Morocco. The last thing you need is blisters from new boots when you have walked for 3 hours and have another 9 hours to go. Enjoy every step.... it really is amazing!
Question : Is there anything else you would like to add?
Answer : Great first trip with Exodus.

Title : Mt Toubkal, you tricky customer
Summary : With our 50th birthdays looming, a few friends decided to take on a challenge. Onto the Exodus website we went... All 4 of us are fairly fit so decided a "challenging" level would be just the ticket! Mt Toubkal did not disappoint! It was definitely a challenge! Who knew it could rain and snow so much in August? Because we followed the trip notes, universal packing and read some reviews, we believed we were ready! We just didn't account for the altitude sickness! This took 3 of us out and only one of us made it to the summit.

Question : What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Answer : For me, it was the summit and just before! The hours before the summit were extremely difficult as you are hiking in the dark with just a head torch, following the boots of the person in front. It was steep, raining/hailing so it was slow going. When we stopped just shy of the summit, we witnessed the most amazing sight: A rainbow over the High Atlas Mountains! It was worth all the rain to see this sight. After waking up at 330am, hiking for 4+ hours, the summit was a sight to behold! (even if it was snowing in August... in Morocco... yes, snow in August!)
Question : What did you think of your group leader?
Answer : Ilyas our group leader and Abdul his assistant were amazing!!! With 3 of my friends ill with altitude sickness, Abdul took incredible care of them. Both Ilyas and Abdul have a great sense of humour and made us all laugh. After 2 days we understood "Ilyas time" (ie 5 min in our time is 10 in Ilyas time) and his love of telling time in seconds! Ilyas organised our day well and I now miss someone telling me when to wake up, when to eat and when to start walking! They both gave us a great insight into Moroccan culture and the religion of Islam. I have left knowing I will have a "home away from home" in Morocco! Ilyas also organised tours and spa visits on our last day in Marrakesh. He was great!!
Question : Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Answer : Be prepared! Be fit! It is definitely NOT a walk in the park. Pack for all weathers including a rain cover for your day pack or at least a dry bag for inside the pack. Also I found sticks a must for descending. And have a head torch, not just a hand held torch because you need your hands to clamber over large rocks ets (also bring extra batteries just in case). Because you start and finish the summit ascent at the refuge, make sure you have clean dry WARM clothes ready for your return to the refuge. Drinks are not served with dinner at the refuge so make sure you have money to buy a drink from the shop or have a bottle of water ready. Also make sure you have dirham change for the hike as you stop at various places to buy juices on the way to the refuge. They won't take big denominations of dirham. Also, its best to have EUROs or Dirhams. Not many places were happy with GBP or USD.
Question : Is there anything else you would like to add?
Answer : Just a quick thanks to all at Exodus. Ilyas and Abdul were great and I would highly recommend any trip they lead. Exodus kept us well informed via emails etc. I will use them again for sure!

Title : Grear Challenge and Trip
Summary : A superb mix of challenging walk and city sightseeing. Abdoul was a superb guide, looking after all our needs. It is a challenging walk with a long second day and no flat bits to catch your breathe on the way up. But a bit of fitness and determination and you will make it!

Question : What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Answer : Reaching the summit after getting up at 3.40am and walking from 5am to reach the top at 9.30am with snow at our feet and a perfect blue sky and sun.
Question : What did you think of your group leader?
Answer : Abdoul was a great team leader, interacting with the group and checking we were all happy. But he also gave us space for time as group.
Question : Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Answer : If doing in winter think about getting a thermal protector for your water bladder. Everyone's froze as we walked up to the summit.

Title : Mt Toubkal Winter Adventure
Summary : It was a great weekend, an experience that I will not forget.  The trip was challenging - probably more than I expected - and well organised, the people in our group got on well. I recommend it for first time climbers if you want to get a taste of real mountain climbing where you have the opportunity to use crampons and ice axe travel during the winter.

Question : What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Answer : As they say the journey is that matters the most. Reaching the summit was wonderful but the most inspirational moment for me was the way up there. I found it amazing how people in our group supported each other on the way up to the top. Every step was hard to take and we all wanted to make it together, we all worked as a team. The scenery was spectacular.
Question : What did you think of your group leader?
Answer : Yaya was sociable, friendly, looked after us well  and kept a good pace. He knew the mountain very well and we felt safe with him. We had a second leader on the summit day for extra security. They were both great.
Question : Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Answer : If you want to enjoy the trip, good level of fitness is important. Don't underistimate climbing Mt Toubkal during winter.Just book it and enjoy the experience!

Title : Mount Toubkal Long Weekend - Winter
Summary : Brilliant long weekend away! Unfortunately we didn't make the summit due to bad weather conditions but trekking through the snow and using crampons and an ice axe for the first time was a great experience!

Question : What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Answer : In reflection it was probably summitting the high pass that we attempted instead of the summit. We'd been trekking in a blizzard, and it was pretty hard work so it was a great achievement. However at the time I was pretty cold so I think the inspiration came later on!!
Question : What did you think of your group leader?
Answer : Really good, sociable and knew a lot about the area. I think that he made the right decision not to attempt the summit - it had been snowing a lot and there were some real risks, but I think the group really appreciated the alternative trek to the high pass that we managed!
Question : Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Answer : The refuge was much warmer than I'd expected! I brought a thick down sleeping bag and didn't actually need it - the dormitories are nice and snug! The food was really nice and there was plenty of choice - we were definitely very well fed.
Question : Is there anything else you would like to add?
Answer : Really good trip, obviously I was disappointed to not make the summit but the fact this is such an easy trip to make from the UK means that it will be easy to attempt again in the future!!
